ok if i have a video file that is the whole move and i want to split it what are the steps that is should take in virtual dub im doin something wrong cause it gives me this too large of a file window when i try to save it out of v dub

take a look at my guide
go to MUXING, then 6.7 should be the right step for splitting.

what is the difference in dvd2avi if u push f4 to save or if u press save as avi what would be the point in saving as an avi if that is any different

The difference is that hitting F4 is for creating project file, a project file just contain an index of the source matirial and some settings. No conversion takes place when you do this.
If you hit save as avi, you will convert the video, to an avi file using whatever codec you select after hitting save.
