I tried with Flaskmpeg, avisynth+Virtualdub also decoding the dvd to huffyuv avi and then encoding the resulting file with Virtualdub, Ulead Media Studio 6.0 and Premiere to get a divx or mpeg4 high quality movie at 1500kbps but I didn't like results, for this reason a tried with TMPGEnc and for my surprise I could get much better results.

Source: Macross boxset (disc_1)

DVD2avi as frameserver of TMPGEnc

DVD2AVI default settings (unless "decode" in audio)

Resulting files:
Macross_ep1.d2v
Macross_ep1 AC3 T01 2_0ch 192Kbps 44.1KHz.wav

Open Macross.d2v in TMPGEnc

TMPGEnc settings:
resize_____352x240
Filter "noise reduction"_____Still picture=100; Range:2; Time axis:100 (I didn't have idea that TMPGEnc filters also works with avi output)
Then: File_Output to file_Avi file_Codec MS Mpeg4 1500kbps

Resulting file: Macross_ep1.avi

I did this with 3 episodes of macross and the Resulting files was:

Macross_ep1.avi
Macross_ep2.avi
Macross_ep3.avi

The video files was joined with Virtualdub (append avi segment_direct stream copy_save as...)

Macross_ep1 AC3 T01 2_0ch 192Kbps 44.1KHz.wav
Macross_ep2 AC3 T01 2_0ch 192Kbps 44.1KHz.wav
Macross_ep3 AC3 T01 2_0ch 192Kbps 44.1KHz.wav

The audio files was joined and converted to mp3 96kbps with Cooledit 2.0

Resulting files:

Macross.avi (576mb)
Macross.mp3 (48.6mb)

Then I mux the files with avimux 0.4 and done.

Macross.avi (626.4mb)

(subtittles & MDVD Launcher add 300kb to de final size of the CD)
