Hello,

I'm having a problem with a .avi file wich I think is compressed using xvid. How can I play this file.
The filename: moviename.xvid-deity.avi
When I try to open the .avi file in VirtualDub I get the following error: "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown) VirtualDub requires a Video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."
Where can i download these codecs or is there another way to view this file.

I hope anyone can help me!?

You have two options.

Either get the xvid codec, or use an fourcc changer to change the fourc code to 'DIVX'

There's a link to the codec in the news section, and you can find the fourcc changer in the software section here at the divx-digest.

Yep, you need the XviD code. TRy looking in the software section here, www.divx-digest.com, as khp stated.

Load the avifile into the fourc changer, change both the description and used code to DIVX, and click apply. You will the be able to view the file with divx4/5.

if you change the fourcc to divx from xvid, does it down the quality?

I do not think utilizing the divx 5 codec as an xvid decoder would result in quality degredation.
