powerdvd 3 does the job perfectly fine for me.

You need an MPEG-2 codec. When I installed the Elecard player, it included the codec. I can use Elecard to play .mpg files. But I find Windows Media Player easier to use. And since the Elecard installation gave me the MPEG-2 codec, WMP can now play MPEG-2 files.
