Got this error when I try to open a mpeg file (taken from a VCD using vcdgear) in VirtualDub. I read the article on fixing the mpeg using graphedit, but the link to the program is broken and I wonder if there's an easier way of fixing the mpeg file.

You can obtain Graphedit at:

http://www.dvd-digest.net/downloads/files/encode/graphedit011008.zip

I checked this link just before posting this response - it's valid.

Let us know of your success ;>}

I have followed nicky's guide on converting stubborn mpeg-1 to avi's (http://168.144.91.167/nickyguides/stubborn-mpeg.htm), but graphedit gave me the error "can not save avi", and the graphedit core dump afterwards (on a winXp machine). Any ideas?

You haven't indicated whether you were able to play the extracted MPEG1 file...

The extracted MPEG-1 file can be played on windows media player 7. The file was extracted from a video CD using vcdgear. According to nicky's guide, media player torlerates "stubborn" mpeg-1 files.

There's an outside chance that TMPGEnc would accept the file as input - in which case, you could then resave it with a new name.

I used TMPGEnc to re-encode the bad mpeg-1 file, and now virtualdub is willing to open the new mpeg-1 file. But this is a time-consuming solution since the encoding process takes several hours. Any other possible solutions?

I'm glad to hear that my suggestion worked.

No, I can't think of any "quicker" solution. Assuming that this is an isolated occurrence, I'd personally be satisfied at having found a way to resolve the problem.

I'd be interested in knowing if you do come across any faster ways...
