    wave_format_ac3

Hi, I need to convert the audio of an .avi I recently downloaded to MP3: analyzing the file, I uncovered that the original format is "wave_format_ac3" (Dolby Labs): what (the hell) is that? where can I find a codec to handle it?

    Thnx a lot!

It's probably an .AC3 file with a .WAV header...

I believe that you should be ablt to load the file into NanDub - and convert the audiostream to .MP3.

Nope Neither Vdub nor Ndub can handle it without a specific audio codec...

The only other thought that comes to mind is to see if an audio editing program, such as GoldWave can successfully extract the audiostream from the video. If so, it can then convert the stream to .MP3...

I had this problem a few months ago, and here's the solution. On divx-digest.com there's a link in the audio section (i believe, if not there then its in the software section) called BeSweet. its a commandline program, but a good GUI for it is also available. Use VirtualDub to save the audio (save WAV) on direct stream copy (aka bring it to AC3 file with a WAV header). then use BeSweet to open this file and you can recode it to an uncompressed wave, or if you have the external LAME codec, you can bring it directly to MP3 (other formats also available with the external codecs). I personally bring it to an uncompressed wave so I can visually edit it in an audio editor for normalization/down sampling/etc. without and extra step of coding quality loss. I hope this helps.
