80% of divx have sort of hissing voices

I've got a strange problem with playing divx-movies on my computer. About 80% of all divx movies have a sort of hissing voices when i play them. The words with the 's' in them are hardly understandable because of the strange sound of the 's'. I encounter no other problems with divx plyback only this bad sound problem. Could it be due to my soundcard (soundblaster64) or my processor being somewhat to slow for divx-playback (P2-350Mhz). If anybody has got the slightest idea i'd be happy to here about it.

What are you using to play the Divx file?

I'm using Windows Mediaplayer2 on a windows98 operating system

That's usually indicative of too low a frequency (Anything less that 24,000Hx may result in sibilant Ss). You can correct this in the following manner:

1) Load the file into VirtualDub

2) Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"

3) Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"

4) Under the "Audio" tab, click on "Compression" and select a frequency of 32,000Hz or higher

5) Under the "Audio" tab, select "Conversion", put a checkmark in the box labelled "Show all formats. Select an appropriate (e.g. from the 32,000Hz group, if that's the frequency you've chosen) .MP3 sampling rate

6) Click on "OK"

7) Save with a new filename

It worked fine, so that's good news. the bad news is that the files are now twice the size they were before.

I think it worked because the audio-stream does not have to be decoded anymore and that was what gave the problem in the first place; that my computer is not good (fast) enough to decode both the video and audio stream at the same time. Was that why you suggested it or do you have other thoughts about this.

Nope. As a matter of fact, due to the higher frequency used in the new file, your computer is actually working harder and yet is, according to you, playing properly (no more sibilant S's) ;>}

Regarding increased filesize, there's a price to be paid for everything...
