Are you able to PLAY the file that you've created (in Windows Media Player)?
no it will not play in windows media player, it says its looking for a codec , and then it gives an error.
its just a wav file, why does it need a codec ? is it that ac3 audio ?
attached is the screen shot of the error

It would appear that, contrary to what you believe, you haven't created a .WAV audiostream.
What procedures did you use in VirtualDub?
loaded avi in to virtualdub, then click file>save WAV...

Does the ORIGINAL .AVI play properly, including audio?
If it does:
1) Load the file into VirtualDub
2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"
3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box
I dont have the audio codec installed, I did but dont know how it got erased. do you know where to get the ac3 audio codec ?

Download, install and register with Windows the IVIAUDIO.AX filter/codec, available separately or as part of the many codec "packs" available.
**IMPORTANT - VirtualDub v.1.4AC3 is a specific MODIFIED version of VirtualDub!
Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub v1.4C-AC3, set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying" and select (under "File") "Save .WAV/.AC3" - and save as .AC3 (IMPERATIVE to save as .AC3!).
Despite the fact that .AC3 file extracted using VDub-AC3 doesn't play properly, PX3AC3Converter (or BeSweet) will do a perfect job of converting it to .WAV format.

That VirtualDub, where do I get it ? or do I already have it with the VirtualDub ?

Go to:
http://www.dvd-digest.tv/downloads/files/virtualdub/VirtualDub_AC3.zip
that link would nt work
Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub v1.4C-AC3, set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying" and select (under "File") "Save .WAV/.AC3" - and save as .AC3 (IMPERATIVE to save as .AC3!).
When I went to file, just Save WAV was there...... , not Save WAV/AC3
Setarip, when I went to file, there was only save WAV... , not save WAV/AC3

Click on "Save WAV" and give the file an extender of ".AC3"...
