vcd to mpeg? is it possible?

hi. i just got back from taiwan and got a hold of some vcd's... to me there kind of an inconvience... i was wondering if any of you would know how to convert a vcd to a mpeg format. and what and where to download for this..

VCD Cutter will reconvert the .DAT file of a VCD back to its original .MPG format.

Be aware that although appearing to be freeware, this program is almost "secretly" a commercial program. It will function properly and completely for (if I remember correctly) 10 days.

hey, thanks for getting back to be so soon.... but do you think there is one out there that is actually free for ever sort to say... and what's the advantage of having vcd over mpeg anyhoo..just wondering.

The only purpose, of which I'm aware, for creating a VCD rather than a "plain vanilla" MPEG1 file is if you want to (possibly) be able to pay it on a standalone DVD player for viewing on your TV.

another good program that's completely free (at least last time I checked) is vcdgear. You can convert .dat to .mpg, or even the bin/cue to .mpg. You can get it at http://www.vcdgear.com

thanks for the replys peeps... just wondering if there some quick hints for vcdgear. i played around with it and converted some Dat. files but nothing comes up or can't play it...:sleep:

convert the file that says something like "mpegsq" or similar, i forgot what it says and yes thats the only reason for vcd format is to play it on the dvd player which i do.

I have successfully converted DAT format files to MPEG with Videogear. However, since there are 2 languages in my DAT files, there's also 2 difference languages in my new MPEG file. Does anyone know if there's a way I can extract only one of the languages so I have a MPEG file with only one audio track?

Use TMPGEnc to first demultiplex the file, then re-multiplex the video-only file with the one soundtrack that you want.

Thanks, I've tried that but after de-multiplexing, I ended up with one audio file with 2 languages. How exactly do I separate it into two different audio tracks?

There are two different de-multiplex tabs in TMPGEnc. DO NOT select "Simple DeMultiplex". Select the tab that only says "DeMultiplex". Load in your file and you'll see that its' broken into streams - in your case, probably one video and two audio. Delete the audio stream you don't want. Save the video stream and (remaing) audio stream. then load them back into TMPGEnc and multiplex them.

Sorry, I've just tried that and for some reason I only see one audio track. Any alternative?

Perhaps I've misinterpreted your initial posting.

1) If you run the MPG under Windows Media Player, if you right click in the window and select "Language", does it show two streams ("C(0)" and "C(1)") or just one stream ("C(0)")? What happens when you play the original VCD on your computer?

2) When you play the MPG, are you hearing both languages mixed together? If so, an dthis didn't happen with the original VCD, you can surmise that VCDGear did not properly convert your file.

1) I don't see "Language" when I right click. I'm using Windows Media Player 7.01. When I play the original VCD, I used Power DVD and I can choose language.



2) When I play MPG, I hear both languages from the two speakers.

1) To be able to access "Language" and "Properties" as I described, install the older but more versatile Win Media Player v.6.4.

2) Based on your response, "When I play MPG, I hear both languages from the two speakers", I am fairly certain that as I speculated earlier, VCDGear did not perform a proper conversion.

hey setarip..i also use the older version cause i have had problems with the newer one...but i didnt need to install the older one..doesnt it come with windows? under -my computer-hard drive-program files-windows media player .i had no idea it was there 'till the newer one messed up.
