I installed the Xvid codec to playback a Xvid avi file, but when I play it in wmp, I do get sound, but all I get is a blank green screen. I tried changing the description code and used codec to Divx using the fourcc changer, but that didn't help at all. Can anybody help me??
Sounds like a fake, this thread explains what to look for in a fake file.

OK, so I went ahead and followed the advice posted in the link and this is what I got using VirtualDub:
VIDEO STREAM:
Frame size, fps: 576x432, 29.970 fps
# of frames: 43306 (24:04)
Decompressor: DivX Pro 5.0.2 Codec
# of key frames: 482
Min/avg/max/total key frame size: 3251/22930/103030 (10794K)
Min/avg/max/total delta frame size: 72/2496/70585 (104391K)
There is info in the audio stream section, but since the audio works fine, I don't think I have to post it here...
If I'm following all the advice on the link correctly, I don't think that I have a fake file here. Am I missing something?

I just found that the file I was having problems with could be now played with DivX Player. Which is weird in itself because yesterday it didn't even play in the Player... And I still can't playback the file in WMP. Is it just because WMP is messed up?

Correct I don't see anything unusual in this file.
I would suggest you try installing the latest version of xvid and change the fourc code back to xvid. Other than that I don't know what might be causing you problems.

I also am having problems playing xvid files from Kazaa. I downloaded something called avc x which is supposed to be a codec. anyway, these files wont play in mplayer. I can get them to open in virtual dub and run them through. when I transfer them to tmpgenic to turn into vcd's, tmpgenic crashes.
I dont want to create xvid files, only to convert them to vcd's. any suggestions?

Most people although they have the XviD codec still can't play those movies, however a solution most of them say worked is to download BSPlayer (0.5 or newer) and try viewing it there.

thanks for your responce.
however, its not that I want to view these xvid files, I want to run them through tmpgenic so I can burn them on nero. any ideas?
