Is it possible to play DivX movies on a DVD player?

Is this at all possible, or are there no current DVD players that support DivX playback?

If not, do I have to create a VCD or an SVCD to be able to watch my DivX movies on a regular DVD player?

I've also seen some tutorials on http://www.doom9.org on how to create your own CD's that can auto-play your DivX files, but I presume it's just for the computer and not a regular DVD player.

It would also be great to know how to create a CD which can play back on a DVD player (i.e. Auto-play a *.avi file or something.) I'm trying to get LoTR to play back on a DVD player. I have it split up into two parts so far but I'm not sure if it will play back on my DVD player with it being encoded with DivX 5.02.

Any input is really appreciated and I apologize if this is the wrong forum to be posting this.

No current dvd players that are sold in stores are capable of playing DivX files. Only a certain few on the internet, but those are expensive and *might* have compatibility problems with some types of DivX.

Yes, either Vcd or Svcd, although most newer players are capable of playing XVCD's (eXtended VCD), which are basically non-standard vcd's, thus they can be manipulated how you want into any size (640x272 etc.) and bitrate changes.

Before you start making any vcd's, its best to check out this site (http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers) to see what your dvd standalone is capable of playing.

No problem dude;)

VCD and SVCD will not have the same quality as the divx, especially when viewed on a computer screen. The only reason to make mpeg-1 (vcd) or mpeg-2 (svcd) files is to view them on a tv screen with a dvd player. Vcd are usually in 352x240 resolution (for the NTSC t.v region) and svcd's are 480x480. It might seem bad quality on your pc screen, but when you try it on your televsion, you see the huge difference and it actually looks good (because of the low resolution of the tv screen).

Based on your experience with VCDs and SVCDs, would you just go with a VCD in order to view it on your TV or would you rather go with a SVCD?

Are there any large file size differences between a VCD and a SVCD?

Although there are ways to increase figures for both formats, you can typically place 60-80 minutes of playing time on a VCD and 35-45 minutes on an SVCD...

Once again, be aware that they might have some conflicts with newer or older versions of divx. So be aware before buying;)
