Unable to open AVI file

For some reason, some of AVI files I borrowed from a friend copied directly from a CD to hard drive cannot be opened. If I try to open it, it will say format unrecognized and I can't view any AVI data in the Summary pane of Properties. Opening it in Nandub doesn't do anything, either. Is there a program to fix this? Maybe DivFix, or would that do something else?

does it play directly from the cd?
can you play it in WMP 6.4?

Well, I don't have the CD anymore. I tried scanning it with GSpot but it shows up as an invalid AVI file. So is this broken, or ruined?

try changing the extention to .mov, .asf, .wmf etc... Then play the file.
