I have a video file that doesn't want to open. I asked someone else who has the same file which codec is used, they told me Xvid. So I came here. Whenever I try to open it in WMP, it says "class not registered" I have downloaded the codecs but nothing. I try to open the file in DIvx player and it fails to open. Any advice? pleeeease

To update, I have uninstalled all of the codecs I originally had on my system. Installed the Tsunami pack 3.9.3. no luck. I then installed various Xvid codecs to no luck. I am starting to think that the actual file is corrupt. Any help?

Iīm having the same problem here... but Iīm sure the file is not corrupt, because I can watch it on my brotherīs computer...
Actually, I opened the file once, but it kinda messed up with windows media player and I had to reboot, and then I started getting this "class not registered" on all my xvid files...

Re-install your XviD codec.

done that, still not playing...
but I also installed BSplayer, and when I try to watch this xvid file it says "Unknown file format (DIV3)"
to be more specific, Iīve downloaded the Two Towers CD1, and trying watching that movie caused this.... and Iīve downloaded RINGU and doesnīt work either...

both titles should not be div3 but xvid
you said to have downloaded the xvid codec.
did you also install it up properly?
tried FFDSHOW for playback instead?
might be a very good idea.

Iīm not sure how to install it properly, could you explain it better? :)
I have downloaded this FFDSHOW... but I didnīt understand its purpose... itīs just a bunch of codecs all together, right?
should I configure anything different?

No.
It is an alternative decoder that is capable of decoding multiple MPEG-4 compression types, including DivX and XviD.

So... how do I install it properly??
do I have to remove all the divx, xvid codecs?

run the xvid*.*exe to install the codecs.
next open an xvid avi, rightclick or use another way of accessing the filter => properties
go for ffdshow
in ffdshow make sure that in the topmost menue: codecs xvid is selected.
this means that ffdshow ill take care of xvid-playback.
of course divx3,4,5 etc could also be selected in order to make ffdshow play those formats.
