DVD -> DivX -> VCD

Hi all! I'm totally ignorant to all of this... sorry for being a newbie.

My dad has been in the hospital for a week and is in bad shape. I would like to find a piece of software that will let me rip some DVDs onto my laptop for him.

Is there a piece of software that will let someone as green as me rip a DVD to a single-file format for playback on my laptop AND also allow me to burn that single file onto a CD in VCD format?

using DVD2SVCD (http://www.dvd2svcd.org) will let you convert the dvd to either vcd or svcd, which can be played on your laptop as well as the standalone player.
