A new firmware (2.0e) is now available for the Sony DRU-500A DVD writer drive.

The firmware updates the following :

* Allows your Dual RW drive to record at 4X on 4X compatible DVD+R media.
* Improves reading and writing performance and reliability.
* Reduces vibration noise for the discs with unbalance or eccentricity.

Download the firmware update here (http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru500adwn.htm)

This firmware update also appears to do a better job (as compared to its predecessors) of determining the TRUE maximum write speed of media - thereby reducing the possibility of unwittingly creating coasters by e.g. unsuccessfully burning -R media at 2X, when the particular CD-R actually must be burned at 1X...

"* Allows your Dual RW drive to record at 4X on 4X compatible DVD-/+R media."

4X recording is ONLY applicable to +R media.

-R is limited to 2X for this update.

Copied that part from thAllows your Dual RW drive to record at 4X on 4X compatible DVD-/+R media

Copied that part from the Sony site (linked above). Must be a typo on their part. I've edited the top post.
