System crash when converting DvD to DivX

Hi everyone! I am new at this forum since I only recently have bought a computer with a DvD player. My problem is this:

When I try to convert a dvd to avi or divx, the computer switches off. I have tried several different programs including easydivx and gordian knot but the problem seemes to be with my computer and not the programs. After using gordian knot I have found that the problem occurs when I use Nandub, and I believe it's the same process that is the problem also when using other progs.

My PC:
Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D PIV 2.4GHz
256 MB DDR-RAM
ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 with 32 MB DDR-RAM
Running Windows XP SP1 with all updates

Hope someone here can help me with this and I would be eternally gratefull!

No, sorry... I don't know if there was any, the computers just switched of and I got one error report when I ran gordian and that was something about changing something back in the register...

without even knowing what kind of codec and thus which tool was actually used for transcoding it is extremely hard to recommend anything useful.

was nandub used for transcoding (i.e. divx3) or was it used for multiplexing AFTER the conversion?

take a look ath your directory.

a gknot*.log should after all be present

Sorry, Still no log file. But I was about 4 minutes in the first pass if that helps anything and it was divx5, but I have also tried divx3

what about latest chipset driver + vga?

is PLAYBACK affected also?

I have all the latest drivers, that was my first idea too...

i've had random reboots during playback once which were solved with newer chipset drivers.

running out of ideas in your case.

irq conflicts or heat arent to blame either?

Check your memory. I have had a lot of encoding crash until I discovered one of my RAM stick wasn't OK.

I have the same problem too since I reformated my hard drive, using any codec (divx 3.11 alpha, Divx 5.0.3 2-pass or XViD 2-pass). For Divx 5 and Xvid, it happens most of the time during the second pass. My computer reboots automatically. I have a VIA motherboard, an Athlon 1 Ghz, 640 SDRAM memory, Geforce 4 Titanium 4200 with 40.72 Detonators.

Another precision : I use FlaskMPEG 0.6 Preview, and I never had problems before I reformated my hard disk.

I can't use the program DocMem it can't be launched ("Impossible to launch a 16-bit application")

If I am not mistaked isn't a 16 bit program Windows 4.x or something similar?

thats because its a dos based program, it should make you create a bootable floppy to use it from.

but if you want to test your memory the best program to use is memtest http://www.memtest86.com/
its also very effective in checking the stability when overclocking.

My RAM is OK I did the tests... Is it possible that my computer crashed because it was overheated (1 week without turning it off) ?

If you running a P4 over night it cools down to about 97-102 degrees Farenheit (depending on CPU) So that shouldn't be a factor. I don't think I have actually shut down my computer in a month

I got an Athlon... But I checked out the forum on divx.com and it seems that the crashes occured because of my version of the VIA 4in1 drivers (I got a VIA motherboard), which could be unstable with old chipsets. After having thought about it, I realized that as soon as I had installed those drivers, my rips didn't work. I guess I'ma try tonight.
