new to home movie editing

Started off with a home build computer and I installed the pinnacle DV500 card and adobe premiere 5.1c. Managed to capture from my VCR about 90 minutes of home movies from vhs tape. So far everything is working fine. There are 20 files of ~2GB for the movies. The format is as follows:

I then bought pinnacle express s/w to generate a DVD.

It could only handle 5 files of 2GB each for a 90 minute DVD.
So that would mean 4 DVD’s of 90 minutes each for a total of 6 hour viewing from my original 90-minute vhs tape.

When I try to use adobe premiere to generate an mpeg2 file (compression???), I get an error message that the disc is full. Plenty of space, even tried defragmenting – all to no avail.




So I needed a DVD burner and after some hands on experimenting at the computer stores
I decided on a Sony vaio with a Pioneer DVR- A03 with DVDit and adobe premiere 6.0

Networked the 20 avi 2GB files to the Sony vaio.


After upgrading to DVDit Professional edition 2.5 so that it would accept avi files, same problem. DVDit can only write 5 files of 2GB each for a 90 minute DVD. Help support totally inadequate.



Possible options:

1) Buy a Dazzle external box, hook VCR to box and recapture 90-minute vhs movie. Buy MGI video wave 5.0 and pray.


2) Buy camcorder with RCA jack and white & red audio jacks and 1394 connector and connect to Sony vaio 1394 connection and recapture 90-minute vhs movie and pray.


3) Try divd and see if it that can convert the avi files to mpeg files with enough compression to bypass the size & time limitations that I’m encountering with pinnacle express and DVDit.


So here I sit
Tried to burn
But only coasted.

Any help to get pointed in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

what is your o/s if it's win 98 there's your problem there is a 2gig file limit.
you need windows 2000 or win xp pro to deal with files of this size format hardrive ntfs
please look at link in general discussions\ typical system req. for home video editing
about video capture system i have the same basic system you do and my dv 500+ works great i can capture a full dv or vhs tape and output it back to dv,vhs or dvd download the new drivers fron pinnacle ver 3.0
oh yes try premier 6.0 it's a lot better for your dv cam , did you get a break out box with the dv 500

On the sony vaio has windows xp home edition, it has a partitioned hard drive,the c drive is fat32 and the d drive is ntfs.
so I can get around the 2GB problem but I'd need to recapture the vhs tape. Did you capture to ntfs or fat32 file system?? Seems redundant to put the DV500 card into the sony vaio when I have a 1394 interface there waiting to be used??

I tried putting the DV500 s/w with a downloaded version for windows xp on the sony vaio in order to get the pinnacle codec into premiere 6.0 but I guess I need to delete premiere 6.0 first before installing dv500 s/w. Somewhat reculant to do that since I don't have a premiere 6.0 install cd, sony does an image copy to generate their systems. So all I have is a recovery cd for both system and application s/w may or may not work. In any event the dv500 codec didn't appear in premeire 6.0 but now a pinnacle video window is appearing in dvdit ????

what new drivers from pinnacle (ver 3.0) are you referring to ???

I'm amazed that you haven't encountered size or compression problems with burning dvd's. I can burn and view svcd's (using video wave 4.0) as well as burn and view dvd's (using dvdit) provided that they are essentially small test cases. Fortunately they play on my apex dvd player attached to my TV.

i 'll getback to you with a little better imfo(sleepy & sick so brains not working right) but the dv 500 with the 2.01 drivers not xp ready go to pinnicals site and download -beta- 3.0 drivers they are xp ready i use win 2000 pro i also have 9.4 double sided dvd-r media so no file size issues
