View Full Version : Playback probs on my pc

my pc config is :
p3 450 mhz
192mb ram
8mb sis 6326 agp

So, divx movies (avi and divx) should play fine on my pc, but they dont

except bsplayer, (that too in desktop mode) no other player can play my avi files smoothly. wmp9 gives a very choppy ( pauses after every 3 secs or so) playback.

i have tried all players, divx player, zoom player etc.

i 've installed 3ivx codec with xvid and ac3 sound codecs. i dont think there is any prob with the codecs.

Now, the only prob i have is that while playing in bsplayer, i cant get it to increase the brightness which is very essential.

wmp9 increases the brightness but the playback is not smooth.

If i press the shortcut key for increasing brightness in bsplayer, the movie skips forward(as if ive pressed the forward button) but there is no increase in the brightness.

Please suggest a remedy.

My remedy suggestion was just replace your SIS with nVidia or just more powerfull VGA card. Cause SIS VGA had a very BAD Perfomance (I had experience with it) ! And since I move to nVidia Riva TNT2 with 32MB, the problem SOLVED ! I can playback smoothly on every player ! My PC power was just AMD K6-2 500Mhz. But I had replaced my VGA !

Yeah a 8MB card isn't quite enough to play DivX very well.

1) Install good ol' reliable Windows Media Player v.6.4 (Desktop>>Start>>Run then type MPLAYER2.EXE)

2) Turn off all unnecessary programs running in the background

3) Lower your DESKTOP resolution (to, perhaps 800x600 or even 640x480)

4) Lower your DESKTOP color depth

i tried lowering the resolution and playing in mplayer2.exe but still the playback is still jerky....

If i had a problem wth playback with all players then fine...

but bsplayer plays the files fine and real smooth in desktop mode....the only thing is that the brightness cannot be controlled inspite of the controlss being there...

how do i increase the brightness and contrst for the movies as the controls in bsplayer do not respond!!!

I'm having similar problems trying to get Divx/Xvid stuff to play on my old AMD k6-2/500 processor. Upto now.. the best work around i've found is to uninstall both Divx & Xvid codecs, andto install something called ffdshow (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761&release_id=95213). The latest alphas seem to be pretty good, but im still trying to work out the best settings for my computer.. as its not 100% smooth yet.. Still its alot better than it was :).

Heres the only settings that seem to make a difference for me..

If anybody else has some good settings to speed things up.. please say.

If it wasn't such a big deal I would try going back to Windows 98. That is a little of your problem right there. XP requires more resources than 98 does.

Well I dont know what OS geekhead is running, but I have often thought it would probably run better on 98, but is it worth all the crashes and general mess 98 creates? No i dont think so. When I had this system for myself 3 years ago.. It was horridly unstable. a year or so ago, i gave it to my mom and put XP on.. It's been perfectly behaved and stable all that time, I dont think I'd sacrifice that for a weeny bit of performance.

Another little performance booster is to set mplayer2.exe to "above normal", that helped get rid of some lipsync problems I was having.

I think I'm right in thinking that the PIII 450 is much more powerful than my AMD k6-2/500 anyway... So you *should* with my options be getting nice smooth playback.

Replace your SiS 6326 VGA adapter with at least a PCI VGA card. I have seen a system using this adapter once and, to say the least, its 2D performance in the general desktop was piss-poor. I cannot imagine how bad it is for video playback.

well i run win98se.......and i am trying to work those ffdshow settings as well..

when i run a movie in bsplayer ....the properties options does not show ffdshow config settings until i manually set the settings in ffdshow config to "raw mode" as well..... but this slows down the video horribly.
also the properties has an option 3ivx config....when i click this bsplayer hangs...

what on earth is wrong?? god, it so frustrating...

I have the foll movies and cant watch even 1 of them coz of the contrast(brightnes) probs in bsplayer and playback probs in all other players..

LOTR1
LOTr2
Catchmeif.....
GangsofNY
hicago
etc etc....in all 15movies...

Change your VGA adapter to a more decent one and we will talk . . .

Try increasing the process priority of the movie player. Find out the name of the executable of the movie player. Press ALT+CTRL+DEL, hit the Task Manager button, go to the Processes tab, look for the movie player in the list, right click on it, go to Set Priority, and then set it to Realtime.

See if that makes any difference.

I am not sure if you can increase the brightness in BSPlayer but if you can adjust the brightness on your monitor.

If you are playing it in fullscreen you won't notice the difference to the desktop until you close out BSPlayer.

Yeah u can increase the brightness in bsplayer!!!i had done it b4....but now it doesnt work...

and yeah ive kept my monitors brightness and contrast to full, but that doesnt make much of a difference!!!!

i think i have read a post somewhere abt someone complaining abt bsplayer brightness prob and somebody had given a soln...

I'll try searching for that in the forum....btw if any1 finds that post just post the link!!!

Thx in advance!!!

Reinstall your codecs or FFDShow (whichever you are using) as well as DirectX. Use BSPlayer or WMP 6.4 as the player.

the video runs well now in wmp 6.4 and bsplayer as well...
but there is a bit of frame loss in between..
could any1 suggest what are the best ffdshow settings???
i played a file in bsplayer with aspect ratio 16:4......wmp6.4 doesnt allow to change aspect ratio so there 2 huge black bands at the top and bottom...

but the brightness prob is solved all thanx to ffdshow.....
i m a bit scared to tinker with its settings .... i dont wanna ruin my current situation

so plz a little more help guys......

I personally only have the Post-processing and Codec parts of FFDShow enabled. The rest are left at the default Unticked.

i found another way of increasing brightness and contrast.......
i chose properties-->settings-->advanced settings-->colour management in desktop properties and tnt2 has options to increase the brightness and contrast of ur display.......

But icant update my drivers coz when i download using flashget (from nvidia.com) and install iget the foll error msg..

I downloaded the drivers twice but same error...

i know this isnt the right place to post such probs but i couldnt find any other forum and anyways most of the ppl here are digital experts so i figured they must know a soln to this prob....

Video cards with 8MB memory is generally close to being insufficient for general video playback, let alone one with half that amount of memory. Perhaps you have not yet tried running high-resolution videos on it OR those with colour space that the card does not support (older cards do not support anything other than RGB, if I remember right).

true

i experienced this one more time a couple of days ago at a friends pc.

he was using an old matrox mystique and playing a divx movie was rather like watching a slide show.

problems problems problems.....

the new driver of my riva tnt2 apparently didnt work too well... slowed down every game.... so i removed it and installed the previous set of drivers....so te games work fine..

but now divx movies dont..... so uninstalled ffdshow, etc etc whatever codecs i had and reinstalled them...but still they didnt work..

then i installed nimo codec pack, after which the movies work again but only on bsplayer, wmp9 and mplayer2.exe dont play them...and bsplayer too skips frames in between....

i have ffdshow, 3ivx and nimo codec pack..

plz help....:smashead: :smashead:

Perhaps you have not yet tried running high-resolution videos on

i run divx moviez with 7?? x 5?? or 6?? x 4?? or whatever else, etc. resolutions, fullscreen @ 1024x768 screen resolution no problem on my 4mb card.

Make sure you have set FFDShow to handle the FOURCC types that you want it to handle.

Enchanter
29 Jun 2003, 07:10 PM
Despite your claims, I find it impossible to accept that a 4MB card can ever cope well with high-resolution videos. I am well-aware of the limitations of 4MB cards and I have never come across of any exceptions. Pehaps you have mistaken the amount of memory installed on your card...
