dvd writer problems

my mate has just bought an Nec ND1300 and he bought some datawrite dvd-r's at the same time. however, these disks dont seem to work with it :confused:

so my question is to anyone who has this drive (or anyone in the know ;) ) could you please let me know what disks you are able to use.

What error message that appeared when he started to burn with a DVD-R ?
What software did he use ?

A little solution for him : he can try to burn with a DVD+R to see if nothing is wrong or not.

Has he tried to burn with a DVD-RW and/or with a DVD+RW ?
