After I installed the XVID codec from this site, a lot of the mpg/avi files on my computer have like a thick layer of grain over it when viewed in Windows Media Player. Playback quality was just fine before I installed this codec.
I know this problem is due to WMP because even files on previously burned discs are like this. Most of my videos have become like this while some are still fine...Please help.

Did you have a Codec pack installed before you installed the Divx codec???
It sounds like the problem is due to the codec and if so this will not go unless you uninstall Divx codec you installed. Make sure you have no codecs installed and then install a codec pack.
Your problem should go away. If not don't worry as you will work it out with a bit of persivierence.
Give more info if your still stuck.
Good Luck

Thank you so much for replying. I couldnt't fix this problem for the life of me, so I restored my computer :( Right now I have just the DIVX ALPHA 3.1 on my computer, following your advice I uninstalled it from the add-remove programs thing. Would you please recommend a codec package that includes XVID?
Peter.

No problem peter.
I recomment Tsunami filter/codec pack. This seems to have the best reputation as others have proved to have problems.
You can find the Tsunami codec pack here (http://www.atlandide.net/~uncasms/en/index.php)
You should end up at Uncas's site. click on the downloads button and you will see the Tsunami pack there.
Let me know how you get on.
Steve ;)
