I download an episode of Gundam Seed, and I was blown away by the quality of encoding in the episode!

The episode length was 23:52, and the resolution was 640x480. The sound is mp3.

Here is a small clip from the episode. - http://www.animepioneer.com/SeedTest.avi (right click, save).

How do I achieve the quality that is in this episode? I tried encoding in xvid, but the video comes in green blocks, and keeps fading between blocks and video.

What tools can I use? Is there a guide for these tools?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Movies/Episodes downloaded should be posted in the P2P forum:D

It's all about settings Bitrate and Resolution. There is no guide or settings that will give you perfect quality because all movies are different

What about the blocky video I get?

What was the file size of the episode? Using a high bitrate and high resolution, and consequently, creating a huge file is no problem.

To avoid the green blocks you describe during playback, use FFDSHOW instead of the XVID codec to decode xvid content.

GKNOT/DVX can be used to encode to xvid. Guides at doom9.org will be helpful in this regard.

The file size was 204 mb.

Where do I enable ffdshow?

btw, can I make an .mpg file into a dvd2avi project, so that I can encode in gknot?

Yes I think so. However, the doom9 guides or searching the forum there may give you a more definite answer. Virtualdubmod can also directly load mpeg-2/mpeg-1 files (though it may not be perfect and you may have to change the extension of an *.mpg mpeg-2 file to *.vob)

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/

Using XviD with B-frames enabled (and no GMC, QPel or any other fancy tools), you should be able to achieve the same quality. You can improve sharpness by using an MPEG-custom matrix specially meant for CG/animation as well.

For decoding purposes, I find both Koepi's plain vanilla decoder and FFDShow to be excellent. The latter is highly recommended if the resulting clip suffers from some to heavy compression artifacts.

Download and install FFDShow. Configure it to play XviD (and DivX, if you wish) contents. Don't forget to enable Post-processing as well.

Why bother?

For MPEG-1 files, simply load them into VirtualdubMod.
For MPEG-2 files, rename extension to VOB and load into VirtualdubMod.
