dvd 2 dvdr

can anyone explain to me what are the minimum amount of files i need to put on a dvdr to make it play in a set top dvd player , and if i have to shorten files how do i make all these files play as 1?
any help would be great iam pulling my hair out

ps is it possible to copy a dual layered disk that has been ripped to my hdd
