Hi, Can somebody explain to me what are the differences in .DivX and .AVI files... I mean which gives a better compression/Quality.

How do we create .DivX files.

I like the way http://download.divx.com/showcase/duality.divx has been encoded.

Given a viodeo file (.avi or .divx or .mpeg) how would I know at what BitRate it was encoded...???

Thanks.

DivX is a hacked version of MS's questionable MPEG-4 implementation.

DivX is really the best but...
A problem can be that
DivX is only viewable on a strong computer like PIII 450

As for how to make DivX read Uncasms's guide at the link below

What I actually meant was hot to create files with extension .DivX
Are there tools out there that can let me do that or do I go for a regular encoding and create .AVI file and rename it to .DivX....

When u install DivX 4xx there is a program tool installed with it called DivX Validator that renames DivX files with the *.DivX Extension.
Why do u want to do that for?

any divx is an avi file, not ANY avi is divx, however ;)

divx3 is a hacked version of ms mpeg4 codec - like kaiser-soze said before.
divx4 is a newly developed codec.

for the creation of avi/mpeg4 you will have numerous ways and means.

- flask is quite popular (but inferior imho)

- xmpeg is a flask derivate and a little improved

- mpeg2avi is the fastet encoder, but out of date

- nandub is the best transcoder you could get hold of

- gordianknot is something like a front-end for all kind of settings which then will be handed over to nandub.
