I am fairly new at this. I want to make a "backup" of my DVDs and keep near perfect audio and video. I have been playing with VirtualDub 1.4c / AC3
My question is what settings do I need to do to get 5.1 channel audio and excelent video.
What bit rate should the video encoding be set at (I plan on using the 4.12 codec) to get video quality good enough so you wouldn't know it wasn't the original DVD.
What programs and codecs to I need to use to play the file and get the 5.1 sound output. I have a Sound Blaster Live with the sdif output.
Thanx for the help!

If you could post some links, I would appreciate it.
I'm not sure I need "basic" instructions.
I have ripped and encoded successfully to divx.
I just wanted the steps for keeping the 5.1, and what bitrate people find works best to keep high quality video. I can play around with the bitrate myself, but it seams like a waste of time if others already know the answer :)

6000 is the best choice
ac3 can simply be muxed into your avi using any virtualdub version, that supports ac3 (like 1.3c)
check the top posting in the general section if you dont know doom9 or nickys!

The Video Bitrate depends of a lot of things and u can't say that there is a rule. U can rip a movie of 100 mins and get it 1300 MB and another one with the same sound and Video Bitrate 1500MB .
For Video Bitrate setting u can get a starting bitrate by Download DivX4 Calculator V2.0 or newest. If the movie is too small for 2 CD's
If u use 1 pass set minimum quantizer to 1 or 2 and maximum to 6 or 8 (2CD's).
As for Audio use the settings below depending on the bitrate of the AC-3 File.
AC-3 192kb preload : 80 ms interleave every 80 ms
AC-3 384kb preload : 160 ms interleave every 160 ms
AC-3 448kb preload : 128ms interleave every 128 ms
