I have the DVD The Fast and the Furious... I cannot do a straight DVD-rip to DVD-R, because the audio makes the movie exceed 5GB, and my DVD-R's are only 4.7GB...

Well, my only choices are to make it a VCD, or DivX AVI. I want to make this movie a DivX AVI. I will be using Flaskmpeg and Smartripper to rip. What are the best settings for me to encode this movie to DivX? I have done conversions before, but I got occasional slow downs, and jerkyness while viewing. Any suggestions in Flaskmpeg? My computer has the following:

AMD Athlon MP 1600 @ 1.5GHz (333fsb)
Iwill XP333-R v2.1
512Mb PC2700 DDR SDRAM @ 333MHz
Geforce3 Ti200
60GB Hard Drive space...

I assume, my system can encode it fast enough...

lol...i think your system will be fine.

personally i would use something other than flask. nothing against it as it does the job and it is very simple to use, but for quality you may want to consider another method.

why not try 2pass nandub sbc encoding with divx3.11? The results are excellent, especially on 1 cd, however there is a little extra time involved. (well worth it)

another popular method is gordian knot with divx 4.12, but i havent tried it yet.

good luck

NO! DO NOT USE DIVX 4 because file size is tooooooooo big. The whole point on DIVX is to make the file size smaller than the source but projectmayo have kinda bended the rules which suck, ever so badly!

I agree with DIVZ about using nandub, even UncasMS uses nandub and uses low motion (DIVX 3.11alpha) to do rips.

Give it a shot
