I didn't totally understand your remark about the film-size, so maybe this part of the answer is an "already know" one.

Nero doesn't warn whether or not the moviez needs another cd
For vcd you can burn 1:20 MAX (movielength) and a raw data of 800Mb's MAX (assuming you use 80 minuters cd-r's)

So my first guess would be that the length of your movie on cd2 is more then that.

Why don't you use TMPGEnc for the conversion from avi ---> mpg and then burn the mpg as vcd

The program is very easy to use and even better lets you cut and merge to get the optimum amount of minutes on your vcd
If you're European you would need PAL and there is a nice template for that one
Just open your movie in TMPGEnc
Select an output directory
Load the correct template
Hit start
.................................................. .....of you go :D

Then take this mpg and select in Nero the "Burning a vcd" option
Drag & Drop and Nero will check your mpg for the correct format
Hit BURN .......................finished.

You know my problem with Nero is that it is/was primairely a BURNING-program
So it is nice that they added a feature to convert avi to mpg1 (and even mpeg2) but there are better programs (specially for this purpose) to do this

You'll have to first find out whether your AVI/DivX file is PAL or NTSC. Right click on your AVI/DivX file, select "properties" and go to the "detailed" section. In the "Video Format" section, it should say something like

576 x 304, 24 Bits, 3460 Frames, 23.976 Frames/Sec, 127 KB/Sec, DIVXMPG4 V3

the "23.976 Frames/Sec" is the frames per second property of your AVI/DivX file. 23.976 == NTSC Film ; 25 == PAL ; 29.97 == NTSC.

Put a new blank CD-R in your CD-writer drive

Start Nero Burning ROM 5.5 and start a new "VideoCD" compilation. Now you'll need to choose PAL or NTSC mode, depending on your existing AVI/DivX file. Press the "New" button to start the new compilation.

A new window should open, and you should drag in your AVI/DivX file into the following window :

Once you have finished dragging in your videos (you can drag in about 70 minutes of video per 650 MB CD), from the "File" menu, select "Write CD". Feel free to change some of the CD writing options (such as Lable, writing speed ...), and click on the "Write" button when you are finished.

this is the version i am useing the avi size is 180meg

If that is from the "manual" of Nero, then it does sound simple; still i prefer TMPGEnc :D

What i noticed is the framerate you posted in the first post:
"352 x 240, 24 Bits, 55099 Frames, 14.985 Frames/Sec, 44 KB/Sec, MS-MPEG4 V3 "

This is neither PAL nor NTSC, but i suspect this is giving you the problems
How to change it (if even possible) is beyond my scope of knowledge and i leave that to some-one who knows about that.

And still..............you say the size is 180Mb, but (however unlikely to exceed with 180 MB) it is the DURATION that is the limiting factor; so the length of the movie should not exceed 1:20

disk 1 is 352 x 240, 24 Bits, 54464 Frames, 14.985 Frames/Sec, 44 KB/Sec, MS-MPEG4 V3
158 MB (166,363,136 bytes)

disk 2 is 352 x 240, 24 Bits, 54464 Frames, 14.985 Frames/Sec, 44 KB/Sec, MS-MPEG4 V3
160 MB (168,689,664 bytes)

disk 3 is 352 x 240, 24 Bits, 41890 Frames, 14.985 Frames/Sec, 44 KB/Sec, MS-MPEG4 V3
122 MB (128,401,408 bytes)

yet the first disk worked it created a svcd

yet disk 2 & 3 are of the same as disk 1

yet 2 & 3 will not convert to svcd ?

A typo?
You said you converted succesfully a S VCD, but the link you posted is for a VCD
There is a difference

For the svcd you will need a special plugin for it to work (avi ---> svcd) with Nero (i thought -if i remember well- a commercial one), maybe you had some kind of evaluation plugin that allows you only to make a svcd once?
Or maybe you selected the wrong one in Nero (vcd iso svcd)

Just thinking outloud in the hope you can do something with this info.
like i said, don't know why

hmm, yeh a BIG difference between VCD and SVCD. I burned a SVCD once for evidence for a court case, I converted the vid using TMPGENC using the SVCD temp, burnt it on the CD using nero SVCD template, drag and drop and then write to CD and it worked perfectly.
