media player 8 under xp only plays the sound.

I hope someone can help me, i have an avi file that i want to play using wmp8, the prob is that it does not show the picture, but it plays the sound. I have installed divx 4. i have also installed Tsunami codec pack, and the smr patch, but no success, is it something with win XP ?

    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

What are your PC specs, and what codec appears in the file properties on your movie(s)?

        same problem

i have the exact same problem, and also know of a friend with the same problem. there are videos we could play in WMP before we upgraded to XP, and now we can't- but it will play the audio. my system specs are:

        Tbird 1400 / Asus board
        512 megs RAM
        Visiontek GeForce 2 Ti
Windows XP // Windows Media Player 8 (8.00.00.4477)

I've installed the latest divx codec, as well as the SMR patch (and tried both methods for installing it, the regular and the Win2K server method) and still nothing.

i'm not too sure what you mean by "video properties" but i'll try

        Audio
        Duration: 0:44:58
        Bit Rate: 40 kbps
        Audio Format: MPEG Layer-3

        Video
        Frame rate: 20 frames/second
        Data Rate: 55 kbps
        Video SampleSize: 24 bit
        Video Compression: MS-MPEG4 V3

that's if i right click on teh file.. if i fire it up in WMP and choose properties, it says "video codec unknown"

also, there are some files where it doesn't even list a video codec...

        uhh.. help?

If i'm not mistaken XP still holds the WMPlayer 6.4 (look for mplayer2.exe) try your moviez int his one - or another player like BS-Player

This is to rule out that WMPlayer 8 is giving you the problems

Also do you have the latest Direct X installed ?

            8.1

winXP comes standard with directx 8.1...

someone told me to try installing the 3.11 alpha codecs, that didn't work.

also, i can't find an older version of WMP on my comp, but i just double checked right this second, and BSplayer plays the movie fine.

so the problem is with WMP 8... anyone have any ideas?

              ++++
              Video Compression: MS-MPEG4 V3
              ++++

this is the original M$ mpeg 4 codec (low motion)
you will need to have this codec installed!

make sure that within the tsunami pack (via custom) ms v1,2 and3 are ticked and do NOT install divx4 afterwards WITHOUT ticking the part in the divx4 installer when asked if divx4 should be used for playback of old divx3 format (which it still doesnt do properly!!!)

=> install tsunami again with ms v3 ticked!

get rid of XP and get Windows 2000, its more ownage.

even thou their the same OS, in my experience win2k has less problems with codecs.

in windows XP codecs had a problem with disappearing after you installed them.

I have that same problem with WMP8 in XP, but I did find the old 6.4 player and it plays back the files that 8 won't.

On the other hand, even using 6.4 I have a problem with video staying behind of audio on some big files.

Also, so files DO open in WMP 8 but the video problem is horrible with EVERY file that will play, not just some.

What can I do other than downgrade to Win2K?

                    Thx

It does work in XP, but the synching problem is as bad as in WMP 8 :/

                        I think I'll try Win2K with WMP 7.1

Unless any of you can suggest something else.

                        Thx for your time
