RAM upgrade should have most effect,
you keep your hd in shape, (defragment) ?

I have been using an XP1600 processor with a K7S5a board and have found it to be reliable. I would recommend at least 512 Meg of DDR RAM if you are video editing.

What software are you using?

I am using Pinnacle Studio 8.

I would recommend rendering overnight, as it doesn't tie up your PC.

Yes, I'm using Studio8 also, it's easy use this one, and it also
uses a good codec for MPEG2 encoding, I author then with TMPGenc DVD Author, for simple and fast result, or DVDLab for
a more "Pro" finishing.
And, yes, before sleeping...... :) encode AVI to MPEG2..
