Edit DVD's After Ripping

Hi,

I am new to this, so please bare with me. I have read all the guides, but have not found an answer to this. I want to edit some video from a DVD. I DO NOT want to compress it or anything like that. I have ripped the .VOB's to my PC with SmartRipper. I want to to get that video and audio into a single format that I can edit via Adobe Premiere or some other app. I then want to edit it, then convert it back for burning to DVD-R. Does that make sense?? I am not interested in compressing it, encoding it, or anything else. I can not lose any audio or video quality. What would be the best way to do this?? I would greatly appreciate any instructions.

i doubt (though do not know for certain) that you will be able to edit the vobformat in prmiere or any other tool!

but what i'd suggest in order to be able to hanlde the format and still not loosing quality is this:

'convert' the vobs to avi using the highest possible bitrate of 6000
thus you will not be able to see any difference.

as for sound: thats fairly easy, too.
the original sound format is an ac3 stream (in most cases)
extract that format (via vob2audio or dvd2avi) and mux it back to your edited file later on using virtualdub/nandub!

that way you the highest possible quality and the chance to edit

Here is some insight on what I am trying to do. I am trying to make a DVD compilation for my mother. I have purchased legally all the discs for this compilation. (It will be a compilation of old Christmas specials). I talked to a studio in town who said I need to bring the stuff in on DVD and they can copy them all to a DVD-R in 5 hour mode for me. I want to rip the specials to my harddrive to get rid of Macrovision and to also edit some stuff out. Make sense?

Thank you for the suggestions. Like I sais, I do not want to lose any quality at all. If you wouldn't mind giving me a little more info. I am a bit sketchy. I have the vob files on my hard drive. I ripped all the files using SmartRipper. How can I go about getting the audio and video into 1 avi file?? I can then open the avi file in Premiere or whatever. Also, once I get the avi edited, how can I convert it back to a format that I can reburn to DVD-R?? I want to maintain quality and convert from vob into a format I can edit. Then reconvert and re-burn to DVD-R. What do you think?? As much detail as you can possibly post would be appreciated. I am sorry for asking so much. I am very new to this. I have read through most of the tutorials, but I can not get any concrete info on what I am trying to do, as I do not want to compress, encode or anything else.

as far as i know, you will need something like a dvd-plug-in (http://www.pixeltools.com/adobe_plug.html) to be able to make premiere export to vob files.

another idea would be to use the avi file i was talking about before, edit it the way you want to and then turn it into an mpeg2 file via tmpeg or cce and adding a vob header!?

one more thing you should consider:

when you talk about editing VOB files, do you know, how big ONE single files is?

i mean, how do you think you will be able to transfer your files to that company to have it burned to dvd??

I will be getting a DVD-r soon I hope. That is what I am planning to use to burn the files and get it to the DVD company. They also said I could bring them in on my laptop. They said they could get about 6t hours on a DVD at around SVHS quality, which is great for my mom. That is the plan anyways.

I know this post is a little old (like 4 1/2 years) but, hey, the rules say not to post already posted questions, so I guess I'll just get the answer here.

I have Adobe Premiere Pro 1.0 and want to do the same thing, except that I want to edit it to cut out inappropriate parts (for personal use only. I'm not getting into the same problem CleanFlicks got into). The links given don't work anymore.

So how do I convert the vob files that I've ripped with CloneDVD into .avi? Once they're converted I can edit them at will (and then either burn them to DVD which Premiere allows you to do, or just burn it as an .avi and burn it using Sonic MyDVD). So, how can I do it? Thanks.

Get those vob files into VirtualdubMPEG2 and cut out the chosen parts.

I thought u wanted avi as output. If u want to edit (simple cuts) vobs without conversion then Video Redo Plus is the programme of choice.Also try Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD.
As for avi to DVD,try AVI2DVD or use TMPGEnc DVD Author.

Extract the mpeg files from the two VCDs.Join them using Video Redo Plus.Author the joined mpeg1 file to DVD using TMPGEnc Plus and DVD Author.

Thanks for all your help so far. I will be acting on them. I now have another problem. I made a camp video using Premier and exported it as an AVI. I'd like to put them (as well as some other AVI files) into a nice attractive package with menus, titles, etc. I got Nero 6.6, but all it allowed me to do is make a VCD with the menus or burn VOB, etc. files without them. The VCD option only gave me 700 MB, even though there was a DVD in the drive. Any suggestions on which programs will let me put this together nicely without having to transcode them beforehand? I understand it will have to transcode to make the DVD, and I'm ok with that. Thanks.
