capturing VCR

I'm trying to capture VCR onto my hard drive, using an ATI card and microsofts video capture software (comes with XP)...
The quality is pretty bad on the capture, and I basically wanted to know if it was a setting I have wrong, or a combination of the tape/VCR or what? It's a pretty old tape, but the quality on the tv is much better than what is getting transferred to the computer...have a 1.2 gig AMD, XP Pro, 256 DDR mem...thanks.

try to use virtual dub to capture instead of the microsoft product
