I've seen the other threads about upside down images with across the web, but none explain why this is so? Does anyone know what causes the upside downness?

.. I'm especially confused as a video I have encoded on one machine, plays back (on windows media player, all default settings) upside down on my laptop and right way up on my pc ... I can't remember what codecs I have on the two machines, and as I am usung default settings everywhere I guess that can be the only difference?

anyway - the video in question is here if it helps: http://www.nofuture.org.uk/xvid%20no%20audio.avi .. if I can't get it to work on ppl's default settings I'll just go back to divX, but at half the filesize for a similar quality image it's worth a shot on the forums I reckon.

It's usually caused by a buggy decoder. Try installing FFDShow decoder and have it decode the xvid stream - should solve your problem. Alternatively, there are players such as the latest version of RadLight with "Flip Image" function ;)

Thanks DAvenger,

I used the flip image option of the FFDShow decoder, but still a little confused as to why my other machine displays it the right way up without the need for 'flip' being turned on. Since installing FFDShow my divX files now need 'flip' turned on too ... I crave a simpler life

Perhaps some filter is causing this. Installed any codecpacks recently? Post which filters are present in the graph during playback ...

btw. you can disable DivX3/4/5 decoding in FFDShow and let the original DivX decoder do the job - without need of flipping I suppose.

Yea, everyone suggests to use FFDShow, but its just the easiest way, the brute one - to flip it over by hand...
But it in no way discloses the true cause of the problem.
Yes, ok, I heard - the wrong combination of codecs, bad coder, or the color depth must be 16bit instead of 32bit (oh that's a fresh aproach), or what else. But noone is brave enough (with minor exceptions) to state - THE MOST PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM IS .... TRY TO DO ... INSTEAD OF ... YOU DID, TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM!
So the question is still open, for one wise guy to come and find the solution once for all.
