400 episodes to reincode, help

Hey guys, I want to reencode some episodes i have, 90% is anime. Now right now the average filesize is 200 mb, average duration is 23 minutes (audio is encoded at 8kb/s) , quality is amazing... Now i wana batch encode with virtualdumb i also tried a lot of settings already but im just not sure what the best settings would be for encoding anime, or the best codec for it. My target is to get a filesize max 80 megabytes per file. What settings do you guys recomend me? (By the way most of the animes have subtitles in the movie itself, so some deinterlacing doesnt really look good cause the subtitles would be so blured... So please guys help me, anyone got any expreience with encoding anime? So in short, what codec, what settings? :)

200MB/episode to 80MB/episode will result in SERIOUS quality degradation. I personally recommend against doing this, unless you are not the least pertubed by compression artifacts on your screen.

Whoever created these videos has not done a good job. Deinterlacing or, the more commonly used Inverse Telecine, should have been performed prior to compression. Trying to GREATLY compress the video, and also carrying out Deinterlacing will cause even further quality degradation.

However, if you MUST re-compress them, I can suggest the codecs DivX 3.11 SBC and XviD. Both are the only codecs that produce the best-looking results with anime; in this case though, I would call it the only codecs that will produce the minimal amount of quality degradation.

Yes, DivX3.11 looks a little better than DivX5.xx if you encode anime/toons. If you really want to reach 80MB you should reduce the res to 400x300 or smaller or reduce the framerate. With some animes it still looks good if you reduce the framerate by factor 2, it's worth a try.

For TV-captured anime (PAL) I normaly use NanDUB with DivX 3.11 (2pass) at 384x288x25fps and 500kbps.

the suggestions of what codecs to choose are correct,
even the lowering of resolution will contribute to reduce
of filsize..... but I would never, never, never reduce framerate.

maintaining the audio at 8 kbits and reducing a 23 minutes video to 80 mb would mean using a bitrate
of 410 kbits/s in average ....
even a two pass method would not show good results...
animes do need a very good quality to look good....

I would use a bitrate of 648 kbits at least and the result
then is just "bearable" leaving you with a episode size
of 120 mb.

five episodes would fit on a cd with plenty space for a nice menue......
