OGG Vorbis Codec

I supposedly have this codec installed on my system. I can play OGG audio files fine through Winamp2. But I try playing an AVI encoded in Xvid and OGG audio and it says codec ogg_vorbis_1 (0x674f) Ogg Vorbis is not found. I don't know any way to download the codec. I went here http://www.vorbis.com/download_win.psp and they didn't have a clear way of telling me where the codec was.

How can I play this AVI file I have...?

You need to have the Ogg Vorbis DirectShow Filter installed in your system. Being able to play .ogg files in Winamp and a multitude in similarly capable players does not mean you can play the OGG soundtracks in .ogm files.

Another posibility is that the particular .avi file tha you have has not had its audio muxing properly done (.avi files were never intended to be muxed with .ogg files). You COULD try extracting out the audio and re-mux it with the original video file (using VirtualdubMod), this time creating an .ogm file.

that file is ~0.5mb and contains the ogg direct show driver

I found this thread to be very helpful. I have been able to convert downloaded ogg/ogm bitorrent files to PC playable ones, but upon burning these to a cd, I cannot play them on a Phillips DVP642 player (never completes loading and eventually opens the drawer) or on a regular DVD player. I am relatively new to the PC, having been a user for about 6 months. I would appreciate any guidance provided. jim

Thought I had better update the situation with burning cd's from the ogg/ogm base. I ended up using Winavi to convert the file from the codec provided file to avi. It was successful and took a bit more time than the running time of the show. One odd thing, the size of the file was reduced from about 141K mb to 111K mb. The sound was ok and in synch, the picture seemed a bit less sharp than is normal. jim

somehow missed this post earlier.

there may have been no need to encode the file (especially with a craptastic app like winavi). the file may already be compliant.

1. open the file in virtualdubmod, under 'video' select direct stream copy'.

2. under 'streams' click 'stream list'. right-click the stream, click 'full processing mode' right-click again, click 'compression. select mp3, 128kbps. click ok until you get back to the main screen.

3. under 'file' click 'save as'. save as avi. it'll only encode the audio, leaving the video intact, so it'll only take a minute or two.

this is assuming the file contains ogg audio. if its mp3 audio, skip step 2. note there may be other factors involved that will stop the file from playing in a standalone, eg fourcc, resolution, bitrate, qpel/gmc, etc, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it

Thanks for the help. I downloaded virtualdubmod 1.5.10.2 and set about following your instructions. I got to the place where I selected mp3(mpeg layer 3) and didn't have an option to select 128kbps, the highest was 56kbps which I selected. completed the conversion, burned a copy and no sound when I played it. Where did I go wrong. Thanks and sorry to keep bothering you. jim

and do exactly the same procedure above, but now you'll be able to pick cbr 128kbps
