Lite-On LDW-411S - Outer disc skipping

Most if not all of the 15 DVDs I've backed up have major skipping and locking up on the outer part of the disc (3/4 way in chapters) and I can't pinpoint the problem.

I just got a Lite-On LDW-411S a few days ago and I've been burning using various programs (DVD2ONE, DVDXPRESS, DVDSHRINK) and different movies and all of them have skipping near the end chapters except when played on my Xbox. It even skips and locks up using my LDW-411S + WinDVD 5. I've been using Memorex 4x DVD+R (RICOH) and have not tried other blank media but I've read that these DVD+Rs are good.

If anyone has a Lite-On LDW-411S (can't find anyone else who has this) and can burn DVDs without skipping near the end, please lemme know what brand media you use! This sucks =(

It could be your media. The most common reasons for this is medai. this is because cheaper media tends to degrade in terms of quality the closer you get to the outer edges. try getting yourself some quality Ritek GO4's Clone Disc or traxdata and trying it again

yeah that is your problem most likely. memorex is the best, they average about 3$ a disc though

I tend to disagree with that. I feel Ritek Traxdata's are the best discs, within a price bracket. if you want the absolute best discs, Pioneer own brand at £4 a disc are amazing. Never a glitch

Just bought a Lite-On LDW-411S a few days ago..
Okay my disk don`t skip at the end they are unreadable!!!

Tried burning 3 disk`s this day the 2 of them where useless, on the 3rd the first 3 files to be burned worked but the rest where useless...

Surprisingly this seems only to be on DVD-R disk`s since the DVD+R i bougt works perfectly.

Excellent DVD-R disks for ldw411s:

Use TY disks (Taiyo Yuden). TDK 4X DVD-R are made by them. Just check with eg Smartburn to know the real manufacturer of your blank disks.

BOS (Optodisk) disks just stinks...

Please use good quality ones and no problem will arise...

I (NOT a newbie) had a similar problem recently: a run of bad burns with similar symptoms, at about 3/4 capacity. I ultimately determined that I had a bad batch of RITEK G04 disks. Yes, it's true. I verified the problem first by doing a speed test with DVD-INFO on the bad discs, and identifying the pattern, and then by switching to Tayo Yuden media. Their 2x cost about $2 in bulk, and have excellent quality, very scratch-resistant, and an absolute zero failure rate. For my money, the cadillac media. I liked Ritek, but the problem has thrown me off the brand. If they were to make good on my lost money, maybe I'd try them again, but the return policies for bad media suck. You should know that the products from various mass manufacturers like Ritek and Princo are commonly OEM'd and sold under various other brand names, including Memorex, Fuji, TDK, etc. The only way I know of to identify the real manufacturer/model is with a tool like DVD-Info, or DVD-Decrypter in ISO-READ mode.

I just got that drive recently and have been using Imation DVD-R 2x disks with no problems. I normally use Memorex or Maxell DVD-R's so I can vouch for those but I got the Imations on an awesome Office Depot promotion so they turned out to be $.85 per disk.

Ok I'll just throw in my few cents worth. In my opinion and I have had this echoed by many friends and on many other forums that RITEKs are the most compatible disks and I can say I have not had one coaster with RITEK GO4's yet.

As for Princo, these are probably the worse disks you can possibly get for DVD movies, they are absolute crap and will give non stop costers when trying to burn at 4x.

This leads me to the reason maybe why you are having problems.
Many disks are rated at 4x, but this does not necessarily mean that you can burn MPEG data at this speed.
You may get away with burning normal data at this speed because of the parity data which is included when burned, but MPEG data does not have this correction data and therefore is more prone to errors with high speed burning.

These errors usually show up as blocks, jerky playback and stuttering which gets worse as the disks plays to the end and is usually related to cheaper media.

My advice is to try burning slower and/or get your self some RITEKS as these disks are very good at burning at high speeds

I wouldnt say princo are the worst, in fact they are far from being the worst. They are average. Ritek are most certainly one of the best, though Pioneers own brand are better but at £4 a disc i cant afford the :D

Select the download option and then this site gives you the firmware updates for its writers. Updated firmware allows for better id of disks. The latest update mentions specifically improved writing of films. The download file is a small zip file contining an .exe file. Extract it and double click it. It will automatically update the firmware for you. It's very, very easy.
The disks i use are Ritek 4X +ve. I have written over a hundered of these and have only had 1 coaster (caused due to dust of surface before writing). I have tried several brands of -ve disks and non work properly (if at all) when writing at x4 and at x2.
I'm using Nero 6 to write my disks (I have noticed in this program that if you are able to change the write speed, the disk works. With -ve disks, most of the time the write speed is greyed out).
