How to convert .AVI to MPEG

I have many .avi divx movies. I want to burn them onto cd-r's so I can play them in a dvd player. I've tried converting them to MPEG's using TMPGEnc, but it never comes out the right way. Can someone who's experienced please tell me step by step how to convert the .avi to mpeg using TMPGEnc? :(

- Open your .avi in TMPGEnc
- Load pressing "load" the appropriate template keeping in mind that you can fit around 70min of video in a VCD and 50min in a SVCD. Also you must choose a PAL template or a NTSC template (NTSC for usa and PAL for almost the rest of the world)
- Apply a filter if it's necesary (for example if the source video is to noisy) from Settings=>Advanced
- Press Start
- After finishing burn your Mpeg - VCD or SVCD - with the corresponding wizard in Nero.
