Help - A simple guide to playback of DVD on a PC

I know this information is probably hidden in the depths of a posting somewhere, but hopefully I can get a simple answer. This is what I want to do;

1. Copy sections of a DVD (not the whole DVD) on my PC
2. Be able to play these sections on the PC using Quicktime, Media Player or Powerpoint (.mov?)
3. Be able to copy these sections back to a DVD-R for playback on a normal DVD player.

IS there an easy way to achieve this?

Windows XP Home

Smartripper enables you to selectively rip chapters (or .vob files) off DVDs ([provided you know on which chapters or .vob files your desired scenes reside).

Provided you have a DVD player software, such as PowerDVD or WinDVD, installed, you should be able to simply double-click on the .vob files and play away on your favourite media player.

Don't own one (yet), so stay tuned for response from other posters.

Thanks for the info - am I able to compress the .vob files into a smaller file such as a .mov or .avi?

Yes U can with appropriate software.Use DVX -the automated tool for creating Avis(Available on downloads section)

When you have the .vob files already, you can open each directly in VirtualdubMod (Other VirtualDub variants will NOT work) and carry out compression in it. Note: If you intend to open a number of them together (and work with them as a single collection), you will need to create a frameserver using DVD2AVI & vFAPI/Avisynth. GordianKnot or DVX can help in this.
