Help me on right format, please!

Problem
To distribute a video-commercial
I'm trying to burn a CD-ROM as it would be a DVD-R
to be totaly compatible with all DVD players.

I'm trying this with no sucess:
1. encode the avi using TMPgenc with options:
DVD-NTSC (mpeg2 720x) 8000bitrate CLR, video+audio

2. create DVD disc using DVDit, with options:
CD-R 700Mb, including DVD player


Results...
only few DVD players can show video
in all of them the sound is broken as "shhshshs"


Questions
is there any format difference in the files (besides media itself)
between DVD - VCD or else?

When a DVD player reads the media, does it look for a file?
or first try to distinguish between DVD and CDs?

I'm not interesting in VCD because I want to use the 720x
format, quality of original video is good and space is not a problem, since total duration is just 2 minutes.

1) Load the original .AVI video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

The file information appears illogical - If the video is Uncompressed RGB, the number of keyframes should be equal to the total number of frames.

As to why the audio is only "shhh", one can only speculate that it wasn't recorded properly.

Have you PLAYED the ORIGINAL .AVI? Does it play with proper audio?

Load the ORIGINAL .AVI file into VirtualDub
Set both "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copy"
Save with a new filename
Post the NEW file's "File Information" here


See if the new file plays properly
See if TMPGEnc accepts the new file for input

Thanks, I've been working for 2 years with dv
and never realized about the keyframes difference.
The audio on AVI is ok.
Working with virtualdub is great, never had problems.
Do you know where can I get the info about DVD file structure?
Do you think that if a CDROM has the same file struc.
could play fine (as a DVD-R) on any DVD player?

As you've previously observed, VERY few DVD player's can play "mini-DVDs" (DVD format burned onto CD)
