my conversion gave me no sound

I was converting my xvid movie with TMPGenc 2.5 plus, and when it was down the conversion my .mpg had no sound. Should I just extract the sound with Virtual Dub then convert with tmpgenc??

Oh can somebody tell me how to extract the audio from an xvid using virtual dub.

1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub (or any of its variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box


The audiostream is probably in either .AC3 format or Variable Bitrate MPEG Layer 3 (VBR .MP3).

If it proves to be .AC3:

In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to the highest priority. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...


If it proves to be VBR:

Simply use VirtualDubMOD (Different than standard VirtualDub), to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Using VirtualDubMOD to Convert "VBR" .MP3 to Uncompressed .WAV

1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDubMOD (a different program than the standard VirtualDub)

2) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Direct Stream Copy"

3) From the "Streams" dropdown menu, select "Stream List" - and rightclick on the audio stream, then select "Full Processing Mode" - then click on "OK"

4) Save with a new filename

also it has happend twice, when I convert my movie with tmpgenc is always fails, got any ideas.

Another note when I was trying to to fix my audio with VirtualDubMod I couldn't do the steps you showed. I was able to do step 1 and 2, but when it came to step 3, I was able to select "Stream List" but there was nothing for me to right click and selevt "Full Processing Mode". I have the 1.5.4.1 version could that be why I cant follow your steps?

Unless I'm misinterpreting something, it appears that your file contains ONLY header information for an audiostream, but virtually NO actual audio...

The number of "chunks", indicated by this version of VirtualDub or VirtualDubMOD, should be at least equal to the number of video frames...

so what do I do now? How will I be able to extract the audio from my xvid? and how will I be able to convert my xvid?

Have you PLAYED this video? Does it play with audio, all the way from beginning to end?

yes it does play with audi, however the audio is out of sync but the audio does play thoughout the entire movie, so from beginning to end I have audio just out of sync

If that's the case, try the following:

Load the ORIGINAL file into VirtualDub, VirtualDubMod, or NanDub.
Set "Video" "Direct Stream Copy"

From under the "Video" dropdown menu, select framerate - and select "Change so video and audio durations match"

Save with a new filename

TMPGEnc should now accept the file for BOTH video and audio input

so when I save it, I save it as a .wav or as a new .avi ?

well i saved it as a new .wav and when i converted it with tmpgenc i used the wizard and put the .avi for video and my new .wav for sound and when the conversion was complete, it worked, sound was in sync and it was a vcd. so thanks alote for helping me out.

yo setarip thanks alote man, i was able to completly convert my 2 parts of my xvid wich was over 1 gig. I'm joining them with tmpgenc but for the cutting i want to cut each section at 700 megs but when i try cutting with tmpgenc its based on the frame number, you no any programs on how to cut a movie by size and not frame

If (you haven't said) you've converted to VCD, VCD is based on running time and NOT filesize. You should be able to fit approximately 80 minutes on a 700Mb/80 minute CD-R...

well what i did was that when i was converting from xvid to vcd i didn't cut the movie, so what i did was have 2 big vcd's, and once the conversion was completed, using tmpgenc i joined those vcd's together wich gave me a 1.66 gig movie, and then i figured out how to use the cutting tool in tmpgenc and i cut my movie into 3 parts. So thanks setarip for having to deal with all the problams i had with this xvid movie, and the final result is that i now have a xvid movie converted into a vcd and wich is now on cd.
