newbie needs help with playback

I can not get video playback with xvid when i use wmp 9 i get sound with no picture and nuthin happens when i use any Real One or Divx player. The only thing i really know about encoding and stuff is that if u install this codec the video will show so when explaining please keep it simple . Thanks
