Hi,

I have been copying DVD's for about 6 months using Smartripper, DVD2AVI, TMPGENC, NERO soley for use with my DVD player. I have a TV out on my PC so I thought about using AVI fromat (smaller than SVCD) and output to my TV. I have aquired a few Divx films which are about 700MB and very high quality with no blockyness.
I have followed all the guides on this www and on doom9 but cannot get a 700MB(ish) AVI file.

I have used FlaskMpeg, Xmpeg and VirtualDub but cannot get the file sizes down. Most bitrate calcs give me a britrate of about 764kbs which is rubbish quality.
I'm using Divx4.12 codec to encode a 110min film with 128kbps MPEG layer 3 audio.

Anyone, please help!!!!

Around 740kbps +128kbps audio should be OK to fit the movie to 700MB. 740kbps is a little low for highest quality, so you have to use every little "trick" to get better quality...

1) cut off the black borders around the video
2) If the video is interlaced use a deinterlace-filter
3) reduce resolution to 640x..., 512x... or lower
4) reduce audio-bitrate to 112 or 96 kbps
5) cut off the end-credits and the intro
6) use nandub (a virtualdub-clone) for the best 2-pass-encoding

If you follow that instructions you will get the best possible DivX-avi.

"I'm using Divx4.12 codec to encode a 110min film with 128kbps MPEG layer 3 audio."

If you use the DivX 3.11 alpha codec (my preference Fast Motion 910 Kbps) and MP3 at 96Kbps, for a 110 minute film, you should get good quality results and come in comfortably under 700Megs - perhaps even less than 650Megs.

Techno and Setarip are right but I wouldn't advise u to fall under 128Kbps in the MP3 sound. It has a big difference in sound quality and doesn't take so much space (The difference would be like 5MB. in a 90 min movie)

hmmm

i'd rather let nandub and divx3 low and high motion take care of that.

Thanks for all your help, I know have a 680mb AVI file .....but, the sound is out of sync. ahhhhhh :smashead:

I am using flaskMPEG with the audio set to MP3 128kBit/s 48.000Hz stereo.

Has anyone got any ideas on how to resolve this? :)

Sorted problem out by using Besweet to convert AC3 to MP3 and merged MP3 with AVI using Nandub.

Software used.
Smartripper, DVD2AVI, VFAPICONV, VirtualDub, BeSweetGUI and Nandub.

A bit long winded but I have achieved some great results.
