I can't see the picture whatsoever, there are horizontal lines everywhere that are moving around (cant see any part of the picture clearly at all.) tried taking a screen shot but all I get is black...
other xvid files play back fine. I know the xvid codec is being used becuase when i check file, properties, details, it says that the xvid codec is being used (i'm using media player (mplayer2) ).
any ideas?

1. Load up the AVI file into GSpot and post a screenshot of the information displayed here.
Alternatively:
1. Open the file in Virtualdub
2. Go to File -> File Information
3. Post what information you see here

I have the same problem I think! I'm trying to watch "Bruce Almighty" which is XviD and MP3 sound, and the sound is perfect but the picture is like in those captures:

@ ByTheWay:
Are you sure that it's just a playback problem?
If, opening the file with VirtualDub (File/Preview input...), the quality is still bad, probably the file is corrupted or badly-encoded: usually strange horizontal lines appear when interlaced videos are converted to prog. (DivX, XviD, etc) without deinterlacing.
If this is the cause the only way to fix it (partially; results are due to many factors) is to re-encode the whole video.
Let me know if you want to know how.
@ Naknir:
Idem as mentioned before, but in this case the cause could be extremly low bitrate or 2pass encoding with corrupted (or totally wrong) stats files.

What's the error message?
Have you also tried using FFDShow and a different player to play the file?
Regards.

Actually, I get 2 error messages: one when I click "Open video file", and the other when I click "Preview".
Here are the errors:

In any case I suggest you to install the last version of XviD or ffdshow, anyway:
Open the file with VirtualDubMod (works better with corrupted video files and mp3VBR and gives you more detailed info), you can find the very last (1.5.10.1) version here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdubmod/
If then the preview works and video quality is bad you can delete the file, if the quality is good use another player (BSPlayer, TheCore, look at the software page of this site, you just have to choose)

Damn it, I have like I will need to delete it...
I'll try the thing with VirtualDubMod and tell if it went well...
Nir.
EDIT: Doesn't work..... delete?

Well, is there a working version of this movie?? Did anybody here downloaded this movie and had success watching it?
Thanks in advance,

Get the DVD and rip it yourself. It's worth everything you get in return.
Cheers.

In the few years of having obtained videos off the internet and ripping videos myself, I have always found my own rips to far better suit my criterias and myself being able to choose how the final video should be encoded and look. Honestly, most of the videos available for download on the internet look to be poorly or, at best, modestly encoded.
It's your choice which path to take.

But I don't even know how to encode my DVD's....

Learn.
There are guides on how to do them on this forum. They are not hard to learn and once grasped, you will laugh on how easy it really is.
Cheers.

Agreed
@ByTheWay
If you wanna fix your video (dunno if you can use VD, so I'll explain everthing in detail):
Download SmartDeinterlacer () and unzip it in the Plugins directory of VirtualDub.
Open the file with VirtualDub, select FullProcessingMode(F.P.M.) on Video and DirectStreamCopy(D.S.C.) on Audio, go to Video/Filters... add SmartDeinterlace and configure it this way:
Frame only
Blend instead of interpolate (or uncheck this and select "cubic for interpolation")
Motion threshold=0 (or higher, do some tests))
Scene change trashold=100
Seek the movie (with the "key button" or with the slider) and tell me if the quality (in the pan on the right) seems to be better. If not try different parameters. If you like it let me know and I'll explain you how to re-encode a video file (it's really easy)

This is the best method to deinterlace videos...and sometimes may help with "UnDeinterlacedProgressiveVideosCreatedFromInterlac edOnes" like (maybe) yours. Please don't ask me to explain this ;)
