DivX Multipass encoding

I would like to use XMPEG 5.0.2 as well as Divx Pro 5.1.1 multipass encoding.

Encoding with 1-pass quality-based works, but not the multipass encoding. After encoding I usually receive avi-files with sizes of about 16 or 3.6 MB.

I have setup XMPEG as follows:
Number of passes 2
Configuration Divx 1st pass:
General
Performance/Quality - Standard
Variable bitrate mode - Multipass 1st pass
Encoding bitrate - 1500
Multipass encoding files ticked:
- Write log file
- Write MV file
c:\divx.log
c:\mvinfo.bin

Video
Psychovisual Enhencement Fast
Encoding interlanced
Top field first
250 frames

Configuration Divx 2nd pass (changes from 1st pass settings)
Variable bitrate mode - Multipass nth pass
Multipass encoding files ticked:
- Update log file
- Read MV file

Has anybody an idea, which setup has to be changed?

sounds like no second pass was done

make sure xmpeg can handle the latest divx version

dont know, check the readme/website/newsgproups

i dont use xmpeg and thus i simply do not know if the latest version is supported or not

i use DVX and i know fairly well, why i prefer this tool to all other stuff

Does xmpeg have a second pass button just like you obviously had a first pass button, or have you got any button that is for second pass.

XPMEG has a second pass button, but it hasn't worked.

So I have used DVX. The encoding has worked, but I have found three problems:

- the sound was not synchronized
- I only could encode the english, but not the german sound
- Sound is very low. With XMPEG I usually have used a normalisatio of 500%

What must I change

Nevertheless as it looks to be a good programm is there also an opportunity to encode into digital surround?

Tell you what, try DVDx. You can can syncronize the audio with the movie, you can change the audio to joint stereo. You can change depth of the audio so it has more bass. The only downside to it is it's a bit slow, but apart from that i have no problems with it.

P.S and when you bring up the DVD root, if there is german language in the film then you can select it.

I have also tried DVDx, but again a problem arises.

Starting the conversion I receive the following failure message after about 30 seconds:

AVI StreamSetFormat (video) failed. Check AVI codec settings.

I do not mind time using for conversion and tool to use. It only should work at the end.

Are you using 5.0.5 with this? because i used to get that message when doing multi pass. Can't use 5.0.5 with it in fact.

Because you can't have 128kbps for audio. Personally i think gordian knot's more configurable and it has a deinterlace filter that works great (and it's built in). I never have a problem with gordian knot, i get the same quality as DVDx at nearly twice the speed.

P.S i don't know who that was aimed at, but just incase it was me, i thought i'd voice my opinion.

I have used DVX but problems described of Feb. 29, 7:20AM have arisen. Do you have a solution for these problems?

are you sure you're talking about DVX or are you familiar with it in any way?

I tried always to find a solution to have 128kbps as the audio. But like i said could not find it, and i don't give up easily, but by your reaction it sounds like you have the answer.

- in the main dialogue, click on the *config* button on the right hand side of the selected audiostream

- this window should pop up:

in my example i deal with ogg, but selecting an mp3 profil is just as simple

having selected the format of your choice, click on the LAME tab and go for 128


and concerning de-interlacers: DVX uses virtualdubmod as well as avisynth
thus it has access to all the best filter available and is therefor in no way inferior to gk - on the contrary: the build-in avisynth editor is a league of its own and lets you change/insert anything you like in a much better way than gk
