Recompressing DivX to exact file size with VDUBMOD

I'm using my ATI All-in-wonder Radeon 9800 Pro to capture TV. Usually I capture to a high bitrate DivX 5 file (30min is about 1Gb), and then I try to recompress the file to Xvid, the goal being a 175Mb file.

Maybe it's a stupid thing to do, but since I haven't been able to capture TV to a native AVI format, this is the way I've been doing it, and considering I don't have digital TV, the results are pretty good.

My problem is how to get a filesize as close to 175mb as possible.
Doing a 2-pass recompress in VdubMod I set the desired file size to 154000 Kb (thru experimentation) and I end up getting files between 165 - 180 Mb.

There must be a more exact way of doing it, but I havent't found it yet, even after searching all the forums.

Help would be appreaciated!

There's always going to be some leeway but you may want to use a bitrate calculator. For XviD try NitroGen's XviD Bitrate Calculator and for DivX try Ecuador's AVI Bitrate calculator.

i can recommend using DVX for this purpose

you may want to use deinterlacers, you can directly convert from a high bitrate divx/xvid with maybe wav sound (to avoid frame drops while capturing) to divx/xvid with mp3/ogg sound and the desired filesize should easily be reached due to a properly working internal bitrate calc

Thing i find about DVX is, you can't (well at least i could'nt find it) have 128kbps as your audio bitrate. You can only seem to have 160 as the minimum and i find that a bit much, i like 128kbps i think that's quite enough.

I'll haven't had time to test DVX out, or using a stand alone bitrate calculator, but I will try it out.
