Resizing a Xvid Avi file.

Hello all,

Here's the story: :confused:

I got a 700 MB avi on a 1794 Kb/s bitrate, 23.976 FPS, 576x432, encoded with Xvid. It has a 116 Kb/s mp3 sound stream on a VBR.
I wish to shrink it to exactly half the file size, with changing nothing but the video bitrate (figured out it should be somewhere around 900 Kb/s) using VirtualDubMod. Thing is the audio stream is VBR and I couldn't get it syncronized. I went through the forums, found some suggestions about converting the audio stream to a ".wav" first, and disable the original stream, but couldn't get that done (".wav" file contained only first 14 minutes of the entire 50 of the whole file).
As I'm totaly unfamilier with all the video/audio encoding/decoding/converting thing, if someone would be as generous as to instruct me right from the beginning (you can assume, though, that I know how to open the file... lol... ), or to redirect me to a foirmer posted such instructions, I would be more then gratefull.

Don't mean to be offensive, but i well....don't really like explaining how to encode. Because the thing is there's a lot of different routes to go down. But i can tell you this, re-encoding an already encoded file can result in loss of quality. So the quality you have now won't be the same as the other file that you are hoping to have.

Do you mean getting a quality lower than it would be if the file was originally encoded to the size I want?
Anyhow it is a price I'm willing to pay, unless, of course, you got other offers, which I will be more than happy to try...

All i'm saying is that if the file was originally encoded to the filesize that you wanted then, yes you would probably have a higher quality than what your going to end up with. But if your fine with that then.....

Well, as I said, I'm wishing to do it anyway, unless of course you have a different idea. I do not have access to the pre-encoded file, so, the encoded one is all I got.

Someone else will have to tell you how to do this best, because i don't have any experience in re-encoding XviD/DivX to make a smaller file.

open the file in vdmod, chose a video codec and bitrate, save to new file

i had this line in mind when answering:

of course you might easliy apply a resizefilter

Resolution remains the same 576x432, I didn't use the resize filter (nor any other filter), I just recompressed it using the same (Xvid) codec. Audio remains the same, Just had to answer "NO" where the VBR issue came up when the file was open. I just changed the video bitrate to 850 (a litle bit less then half of the original bitrate) and everything came out just fine. The lose of quality is minor and it is definately something I can live with...
