1 pass vs 2 pass

Yo!

I'm encoding stuff and I dont really care about the filesize, but rather that the quality is equal on everything I encode. Now, my question is: Is 2-pass really necessery when I dont care how big the size is? Does it have anything to do with the quality if filesize doesnt matter?

If you really only care about qulity...

Encode @ fixed qunatizer 2 !!!

Use inbuild MPEG matrix or even better a HQ custom matrix like 6of9 or Andreas78er !!!

Disable BVOP's or use settings of 1/1/0 !!!

Use the source resolution, or even better a higher one...

For 16:9 AR (PAL DVD's) you could use a 1024x576 resolution !!!

My advice is to do a 2 pass, and to have lumi masking enabled. Even though you will have a high bitrate you will still save on the parts that don't need much bitrate. You never know, you might not need as much as you would of if you were encoding at cbr or a fixed quant (which i think is a waste).

P.S i like lumi masking, but even if you don't go for this option i recommend that you do a 2 pass anyway.

well if you don't care about the file size why don't you make a nice MPEG-2 out of it with a large bitrate >>2000kbps. I would do two passes. I'm not as big a fan of lumi as ZX50 is, especially when you are going to have a large bitrate.

To answer your question: For a MPEG-2 i would say it really does matter to have a two pass. For a MPEG-4 i would say if the bitrat is below 2000 it does when above it doen't, but then again (in my opinion) why would you like to do a pass >2000 with MPEG-4 anyway.

That's what i'm wondering?? the reason why i suggested lumi masking is because they need'nt have the filesize as big as the think they do. And they might only have to use a bitrate of lets say 1500kbps. But people like different thing's.
