Grr, Argh

First, I have no use for encoding or changing formats. I just want to enjoy some movies. So today, realizing that I had to get it, I downloaded the xvid codec, and suprise suprise, something ****s up. The movie starts with that nice green hue all over the place. Then, about a minute later, it kind of fizzles away. Awesome. I can deal with that now and then. But wait, there's more! About three minutes later, the whole goddam movie freezes and the sound does that little hang-up repeating thing which allows me to close it only by CTRL+ALT+DELETE. You know what I mean. So I tried to play the file again, this time starting from some random point in the middle. Same thing, green, fade, then total freeze up and repeater sound. By this point, I had a feeling that it was either the file, or perhaps the way xvid is configured. If it makes any difference, I have 4MB integrated video in the laptop I watch these movies on, so maybe my comp just sucks. Anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

How did you "realize" you needed xvid?
What version of xvid, and where did you get it from?
Did you use something like GSpot?
Have you got other, possibly conflicting codecs on your comptuer?
4meg vid should have nothing to do with it. If it works, it works. Size of video ram is usually irrelevant.
Green screen is usually cured by installing the ffdshow codecs.

Kindly list what program(s) that you are using for the playback of Xvid.

I was getting some movies and tried to play one in my divx player. It wouldn't play and I noticed the description for the file had xvid in it. So I did a search and found the codec. I downloaded it here.

I presume you mean a "Software" divx player.

Yeah. Downloaded from divx's site a couple days ago.

I would experiment with different players (if you have not done that already). Try an “Earlier" version of WMP (NOT version 9) and BSPlayer to mention a couple.

If you use the DivX Player, DivX is used for decoding by default !!!


Install ffdshow and watch the file with some other player... ;)

Good ones are MPlayer2, Media Player Classic (MPC) n' ZoomPlayer.

If you still have playback problems, set ffdshows XviD decoding from libav to XviD...
