I think that the best term is not suitable to the conversion audio video.
Because all tool of encoding have its particularity.
Autogordianknot will give you good result for the Divx or xvid format.
Tmpeg, Quenc, canopus procoder or CCE for the format mpeg.

Besides, some tools all in one exist: Zealot, avs video converter, sorenson squeeze, to River past.. etc..

In my opinion, "tmpgenc", combined with "tmpgenc dvd author" is easily the best for divx/xivd/mpeg to dvd check out guides at www.afterdawn.com
