miniDV to mpeg or avi

Hi ,

I'm pretty much new to digital video ( have read mostly during academic courses ) so please bear with me. :angelgrn:


I'd like to convert miniDV to avi or mpeg.

My guess is :

(1) I connect my camera via firewire
(2) Use Adobe / FCP to read the data and convert it to DivX of some other format
(3) Once on my hard disk, I can convert this into whatever format I want provided I have the codec.

Howz that ?
