Xvid encoding-- File Size always 1 GB

Hi all, i am trying to encode my "mystic river" PAL DVD to xvid 1.02 (koepi's build), with the latest gordian knot.

The resulting file plays perfectly, but is only 1 GB in size, when it is supposed to be 1.4 GB. I have encoded it at least 3 times, all with the same result. :(

I used:

Xvid 2-pass, with and without qpel and GMC, bitrate from 1100kb/s to 1300kb/s (i can't remember the exact number) resolution was 656*xxx..

please help!... i have encoded around 200 xvid's from dvd's so far, so i am quite experienced, and have not encountered this problem before. :(

Personally, I don't ever use completely GK.
Because I call on specific utilitarian and software others.
In short, in this case of face I pass to the traditional method:

GK 0.32:
- rip with dvddecrypter 3.5.1.0 (download the new version and to install it in GK);
- DGIndex for the D2V file and the file audio original;
- Resize and AVS file with with GK.

- converts the original file via mp3 / wav / vorbis / mp2 / aac/ac3

Virtualdubmod 1.5.10
- for the encoding of the video and mux (to load the AVS of GK)


The procedure to get the wished file:

1. rip with Dvddecrypter
2. with DGIndex you create the D2v file (note if it is of the 16/9 or the 4/3) and excerpt the audio of the video
3. encoding of the audio with HeadAC3he or Besweet.
4. You pass then to GK
- Open the file D2v(Debit) and bring in the audio (Audio A - size).
- Doesn't forget to disactivate the function to Calculate Picture - Overhead.
- Between the wished size, and note the taile of the video in KB -1 (security to the overtaking of 1 or 2 mo).
- pass in the Resize (Resolution) Pal/NTSC 16/9 or 4/3 (DGIndex), Smart crop auto then smart crop all or smart crop left-right.
Of the resolution must be consisted between 608 and 672. The mistake aspect close to 0. Bits (pixel / frame) included between 0.195 and 0.3
In file, save the AVS in a file that you will use with VD.
4. With Virtualdubmod, pass to the encoding to the format mpeg4 (Xvid) and the audio mux.

Settings XVID 1.0.2:
Pass1 Unrestricted h263 1-1.46-0.73 / UH6 240 or 250 / VHQ4 / Quantizer 2-4/2-13/2-14 / Treillis Quantisation
Pass2 nothing to modify.

i use pretty much the same procedure as you do; audio is done with nandub, while video is done with virtualdub:

i use decrypter to copy dvd to hard drive, create project file with dvd2avi while extracting ac3 audio, open with gordian knot, encode audio to vbr mp3 and encode video to xvid.... i always use the "smart crop all" function to get the most accurate aspect ratio... however, problem seems to be only happening with xvid... i tried divx 5.2.1, and it worked just fine :P ... seems the best solution would be to just keep it as divx (though they are quite similar, xvid has sharper picture, in my opinion, and is much much faster ;) )

Even in 720p, my results are of 2 or 3 mo near.

Maybe GK 0.32 manages the Xvid 1.0.2 badly.
It is not necessary to forget that GK proposes to best the bitrate, function of the factors that they arrange to reflect the final compression,
Your problem would probably come of this approximation of the bitrate.

Besides, I tried the codec Divx v5.2.1 pro, I have been disappointed.
In mode ultra low bitrate (25 to 100kbps), it hangs the Xvid codec. For the low and high bitrate, the quality is disappointing.
I made the test since its exit with slow stages, slow and fast stages and finally with fast stages. The Xvid gives the best results.

If I was you, I would turn toward the RV10Elysian with the hfe2 mode.
It is only my point of view.

ziadost i don't know whether or not this is why but have you checked the filesize in the XviD codec itself?? i never have this problem so this is confusing for me, i use the 1.0.2 version. But have used different versions though.

lol i am certainly not a newbie at this:P
i prefer to set a bitrate, not the file size... gordian knot calculates the bitrate for me, and that is the one i use.

the problem seems to happen ONLY when using a high bitrate... 1300kb/s and over... i solved the problem yesterday by disabling b-frames, using mpeg quantizer instead of h2.63, and lancsoz resize filter instead of sharp bicubic. it worked wonderfully;) and i got the perfect file size (2-cd's at 699mb each)
