Seems to me the audio in the divx file(s) is badly encoded. Or does this problem apply to every single DivX file on your system?

It happens to each Divx-Avi.
Selecting @ Explorer is enough to send XP to hell :-((.

And do these files behave similarly in another system? We need to isolate the problem to either your system or the files.

They are working perfect under Win98 + Me.

Uhh...and does it work on another system that uses XP? If they do, you will need to look at your system and find out what has gone wrong during installation. Drivers?

I sort of had the same problem.

When i highlightened a divx file from explorer the whole machine almost hung.

At this point i barely managed to get the taskmanager running and i found out that it's the new mplayer that comes with XP that almost killed my machine. XP uses the new mplayer to render the little preview window within explorer.

The old mplayer is still there though..

What i did:
First remove the avi association
(run regedit. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ and remove the .avi key)

Re-associate the avi files and make them open in the old mplayer.
(Right-click a avi file and "open with")

Good luck
